Matthew Callahan

   Watertown Fire Fighter Matthew Callahan, age 38 formerly of Reading, passed away due to Occupational Cancer on August 20, 2025. Matt is the devoted son to Thomas & Elizabeth 'Betty' (Spiby) Callahan. Beloved brother to Kevin Callahan and his wife Lindsey. Cherished uncle to Makenna Callahan. Dear nephew to Cynthia & David Dickey, Linda & Jeffrey Thurlow, Brenda & Stephen Hudd, Ellen & Michael Randall and Margaret Kenney. He is also survived by many loving cousins. 

   Born and raised in Reading, MA - Matthew graduated from Reading Memorial High School in 2005. From a young age, he displayed a deep sense of duty and compassion for others—values that would define his life and career. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2009, where he also served as a proud member of the Student Auxiliary Firefighter Force, marking the beginning of his commitment to emergency services.

     Following graduation, Matthew worked as an EMT and paramedic for Cataldo and Atlantic Ambulance Company starting in 2010. His professionalism, leadership, and empathy earned him a role as a trainer and educator at Cataldo’s Paramedic/EMT Education Center (CEC), where he mentored and shaped the next generation of emergency responders.

     In 2017, Matthew was honored with a Special Citizen Citation by the Salem Police Department for an act of courage and compassion that went far beyond the call of duty—an early indication of the heroism that would come to define his career.  Later that year, he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was hired by the Watertown Fire Department. He graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in 2018 and quickly became a valued and respected member of the department.

    Matthew’s bravery and selflessness were formally recognized on two occasions: once on July 30, 2021, and again on August 15, 2023, when he received company citation awards for acting with great distinction and heroism in the saving of human lives. These awards only begin to reflect the countless quiet acts of courage and care he demonstrated every day on the job. Those who knew Matthew remember him as not only a fearless firefighter and skilled medic, but also a loyal friend, devoted son, and kind-hearted soul.

   Family and friends are welcome to come celebrate Matt's life by gathering for visiting hours on Thursday August 28, 2025 in St. Patrick's Church, 212 Main St. Watertown from 9-11 AM followed by an 11 AM Funeral Mass. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery.
