Mary Flynn Obituary

        Mary J. Flynn age 89 of Watertown, died on July 25, 2022 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital  surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on April 4, 1933 in Cambridge, MA. and grew up in Watertown MA. Her parents were both immigrants from Ireland, Mary McDermott (Finnegan) and Michael J. McDermott (both deceased). She was predeceased by: her husband John (Jack) R. Flynn, mother in law Gertrude Flynn, sister Marjorie Spinello, brother in law Jim Spinello, twin brother Joseph McDermott, sister in law Mildred McDermott (O’Brien) and niece Cathy McDermott. She was a loving sister to Jack McDermott and sister in law Dorothy McDermott (Leone) and brother Michael J. McDermott. Mary was the loving mother to Mary Ann Almeida (Robert) of Norton MA, and Sean Flynn (Andrea) of Woburn MA. She was such a caring and loving mother that raised her children with the virtues of honesty and integrity with strong spiritual faith. Mary had four grandchildren that she cherished: Kyle & Colleen Almeida and Jack & Cailin Flynn. Mary also leaves her nieces and nephews: Jim Spinello (Susan), Cindy Murray (Dan), Lynn Helm (Mark), Tom McDermott, John McDermott (Laura), Karen Stilman, Stephen McDermott and many great nieces, nephews and cousins and extended family Amybeth Dunphy (Pat).
              Mary attended St. Patrick’s High School and then earned an Associate Degree from Boston University in accounting. She was a bookkeeper at Massachusetts Plate Glass Insurance Co. in Boston Ma. for 43 years. After retiring she returned to the work force and worked for the City of Newton in the Parks and Recreation Department for 18 years retiring at age 81. At age 85, the City of Newton awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for her hard work and dedication.
             Mary was a devout member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Watertown all her life. She loved her parish and catholic faith. Mary was very proud of her Irish heritage. She was a champion Irish Step Dancer starting at age 12 and later taught Irish Step Dancing for many years in Watertown. Mary loved the beach and enjoyed many years at her cottage, Flynn’s Inn, in Buzzards Bay. She loved to be surrounded by family, hosting many family get-togethers for birthdays and holidays. Mary enjoyed reading, playing cards and cheering on Boston sports teams. She loved to watch her children and grandchildren participating in various sports. You could always count on her love and support.

                 Family and friends are welcome to come celebrate Mary’s life by gathering for Visiting Hours in the Nardone Funeral Home, 373 Main St., WATERTOWN on Thursday from 4-7 PM and again on Friday at 9 AM followed by a 10 AM Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church. Burial to follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery.
