Brenda Ann (Napolitano) Sweeney age 76 passed away at Newton Wellesley Hospital on Saturday June 22, 2024, with her daughter Denise by her side. Born in Waltham, MA on August 24, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Catherine Napolitano. Brenda is survived by her daughter Denise Sweeney, grandchildren Cassidy and Brandon Reed, sister Carmella MacLeod, niece and nephew Katherine and Steven MacLeod, nephew and wife David and Blair Huston and her former son-in-law David Reed. She is predeceased by her significant other Anthony Cucinotta, son Gerald (Jerry) Sweeney, sister Maryann Costa, brother-in-law John Costa, brother-in-law Donald MacLeod and nephew Michael MacLeod.
Brenda, a life-long resident of Waltham noted for a successful career in telecommunications beginning as a switch board operator at an answering service, to a switchboard operator at Waltham Hospital leading to her final role at St. Elizabeth's hospital as Switchboard Supervisor for over 19 years. Brenda was highly respected by her peers, team members, medical staff and executive leadership. She was known for her dedication to the department, expertise skill-set and professional demeanor. She was an exceptional leader, ran a tight-ship and was always willing to do whatever was necessary to ensure the hospitals communication infrastructure remained intact.
Brenda enjoyed spending time with her family celebrating birthdays, holidays and her children’s and grandchildren’s milestones throughout the years. She enjoyed the simplicity of each day, chatting with neighbors, watching Judge Judy, the Honey Mooners and various reality tv shows about cooking and family life while snacking on eggplant parmesan, wedding soup and of course a “cold glass of Coke”.
Brenda’s #1 accomplishment in life was raising her two children Denise & Jerry. Jerry who suffered from Downs Syndrome eventually succumbing to Alzheimer’s required special care. Brenda took on the challenge and provided the utmost life for Jerry, opening doors and opportunities which lead to his beautiful journey. Brenda defined the word “caregiver” and her devotion to her children set the example for her family.
During the past year, Brenda suffered a traumatic fall breaking her hip, but this never stopped her from caring for her family, especially Jerry who was battling his own illness requiring hospitalization. She never missed a day visiting him and her heart truly broke when he passed.
Brenda passed unexpectedly after giving all the strength she had to fight. She will be missed by her family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and those that knew her. She will be remembered for her independence, love, laughter and determination to do it all. Brenda is at peace now with her son, mother, papa Tony and other family members.
