Arthur Jones Obituary

Arthur Jones, Sr. age 91, of Weston formerly of Waltham, passed away on October 13, 2024. Born on December 22, 1932 to the late Francis & Esther (Hayden) Jones. Arthur served his country with pride as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, aboard the USS Wallace Lind Destroyer. His service during this time remained one of the proudest accomplishments of his life, and he often spoke with honor about his time in the Navy.

After his military service, Arthur returned to Waltham, where he became a well-loved custodian at Waltham Public Schools, serving for over 29 years. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of countless children and families. Even long after his retirement, former students and colleagues would often approach Arthur and his family, sharing stories of how he discreetly helped those in need, including providing lunch money to children who had none.

Arthur’s love for his community extended beyond his job. Living in the Chester Brook apartment complex, Arthur saw a need for a place where local children could play. Without hesitation, he rallied a group of teenage boys and led the effort to clear a field behind the complex, ensuring there was space for little league practices and games,  ensuring there was space for them to play baseball.  He also coached little league.

A dedicated provider, Arthur worked multiple jobs throughout his life to support his family. Despite his busy schedule, he always prioritized spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Arthur’s favorite times were the annual family trips to York Beach, Maine. Rather than relaxing on the sand, Arthur stood watch at the shoreline, always ensuring the safety of his children and their friends as they played in the waves.

In his later years, Arthur found joy in gardening and playing golf, though nothing brought him more happiness than his family. He often spoke of them with immense pride, calling them his greatest achievement.

Arthur is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Jean (MacNeill) Jones. Loving Father of Carol Fahey & her husband Joseph, Karen Hurley & her husband John, Lori Desjardin & her husband Lee and Arthur Jr. Cherished ‘Papa’ to: Brendan and Colin; Michelle, John, Brian and Melinda; Keith, Courtney and Dan; Jen, Daniel, Amanda and great grandfather to: Oliver and Elliot; Shane and Connor; Riley, Julian, Wyatt, Zane, Addison, Kennedy, Brynn and Mason; Will, Jacob, Deacon, Lily.  Dear brother to the late Phyllis Blake, William, Pauline, Bob & Richard Jones.
