Deke and I worked together at the high school in Wakefield for a long time. In addition to being the legendary Coach and tireless athlete, he was a wonderful warm and generous man. He cared for his students long after they followed their dreams. He launched a thousand strong and confident and successful lives. He is the legend that taught children to navigate in a difficult world. Track and field was simply his instrument.

I remember being in the eighth grade and going to the high school track to watch the cross country team train. Deke used to see me there and asked if I was interested in running. He let me run with the team all season. I was so awful but Deke made me feel like I was going to be the next Olympic marathon champion. I got to see how all his runners respected him and how coach loved all of them from the best runner to the worst! ( Me at that time). I remember his record being something like 330 wins an 3 losses! In all the years I knew Deke I can honestly say there will never be another coach like him. Not only did he care about what we could give to the team but how we would turn out as men and women! Thank you coach for helping me become the man I am today! Your character had and still has such a profound impact in my life. May heaven be filled with beautiful running trails! Love and miss you!

It seems that Coach Deke has run his last run into the arms of God. For i am sure he is with him. A gentle, kind and energetic man many will never forget. I still laugh when I think that he always ran faster then me.....and was at least 25 years older than me. He will be missed by many for sure. Enjoy the rest Deke.
