Doris Kierstead, age 96, passed away peacefully in Charlton, Massachusetts on Friday February 9th. She is survived by her children John, Karen, and Mark, her brother Barry, and her grandchildren Brandon, Emily, Patrick, and Heather.
Born in Montreal, Canada, she emigrated to Massachusetts with her mother and siblings when she was nineteen years old. She relocated many times, to New York, Arizona, Florida, and California, often chasing the warm weather that her doctor prescribed for her bad back. She was always called home to Massachusetts and returned to stay in 2004.
Doris began working at the age of sixteen and held many jobs, working at the Bell Telephone Company in Canada, putting chocolates into boxes on an assembly line in Charlestown, MA, as an assistant at a children’s hospital, and in various offices. As a young girl, she enjoyed skiing, ice skating, and attending dances. In her later years, she loved gardening, puzzles, word searches, and Law & Order SVU. Family was the most important thing to her and she took great pride in celebrating the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She especially loved taking her grandchildren on summer trips to Maine, New Hampshire, and Florida.
Even as her health diminished with age, Doris' spirit remained bright and cheerful. She will be deeply missed and will live on in the hearts of her family and those who knew her for her selflessness, kindness, and loving nature.
A funeral service will be held at Nardone Funeral Home in Watertown, MA on Tuesday, February 20th at 12 p.m. An interment ceremony will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
